Board of PT Adopts PTA Licensure Rules After April 22 Hearing

The Board of PT passed the most recent draft of the PTA licensure rules (WACs) after an April 22, 2008 public hearing in Kent.
The rules specify 200 hours of practice and 40 hours of continuing education every two years (same as PTs). Also, the rules say that in order for the PTA to be eligible to apply for a Washington state license without taking the licensure exam, he or she will need certification by an employer (from the last five years) that the PTA is competent. PTAs who graduated on June 30, 2007 or earlier from an accredited PTA program may also be eligible for a license without taking the exam.
The certification process for prior work experience is still being worked out. Also, details for PTAs who do not meet the grandfathering criteria are still being figured out. PTWA will send a mass email to members and post additional information on this web page when we find out, hopefully by mid-May.

The remaining timeline:
July 1, 2008 - Law takes effect; applications sought for PTA member to licensing board
u December 1, 2008 - Projected date for PTA member to begin licensing board service.
u July 1, 2009 - Probably deadline for currently practicing PTAs to apply for a license and be able to waive the exam requirement (grandfathering).

Visit the Board of PT web page for meeting info.
